Exact phrase searches

Use braces or double quotation marks to guarantee that the results for a phrase in a search query are an exact match.

Examples
{International Space Station}
"solar energy"

Proximity/near operators and exact phrase searches

Proximity near operators enable you to search for terms that are near or adjacent to each other within the text of the record.

The NEAR command is used for searching terms that are near to each other in any order.

The ONEAR command is used for searching terms that are near to each in the order specified in the search query.

Usually, the ONEAR/0 command is equivalent to an exact phrase search in that the Engineering Village search engine is looking for a phrase within a search query for both the exact phrase and ONEAR/0 searches.

Example
International ONEAR/0 space ONEAR/0 station wn TI
is equivalent to
"International space station" wn TI

In some cases, using the ONEAR/0 command is not an equivalent search to using an exact phrase search as some fields have content with multiple values. The Engineering Village search engine looks for an exact match of the entire field value for the exact phrase search. However, it only looks for a match of each adjacent term in the ONEAR/0 search. There will be many more results when using the ONEAR/0 command than when using the exact phrase search for search queries using these fields.

The following table contains all the fields in which exact phrase searches will return more precise results than searches using the ONEAR/0 command.

Refer to Expert search fields and field codes for detailed field code and related database information. Some of these fields are available via Quick search.

In the following scenario, the results for the ONEAR/0 command will contain the adjacent words "Northeast" and "University" in an affiliation of the record, but not necessarily the exact affiliation name "Northeast University". The contents of the affiliation field [AF] may contain additional words in one affiliation name. The results of an exact phrase search will contain only the exact name "Northeast University" in an affiliation of the record. The results of an exact phrase search will not contain any variation of this affiliation name.

Example
Northeast ONEAR/0 University wn AF
is not equivalent to
{Northeast University} wn AF or
"Northeast University" wn AF

In order to find all records in which "Northeast University" is listed as the affiliation, it would be better to use the ONEAR/0 (or ONEAR/1 command as applicable) as it is less precise than an exact search, but more precise than a search query with no proximity operators.

Examples

Northeast ONEAR/0 University wn AF will return the following results:

  • Institute of Systems Engineering, Northeast University
  • National Northeast University

Northeast ONEAR/0 University wn AF will not return the following result:

  • Northeast Petroleum University

Northeast ONEAR/1 University wn AF will return the following result:

  • Northeast Petroleum University

The exact phrase search query returns only affiliation exact names.

Examples

"Northeast University" wn AF or {Northeast University} wn AF will only return an exact name result:

  • Northeast University

"Northeast University" wn AF or {Northeast University} wn AF will not return the following results:

  • Institute of Systems Engineering, Northeast University
  • Northeast Petroleum University
  • National Northeast University
  • Northeast University at Qinhuangdao

In the following scenario, the results for the ONEAR/0 command will contain the adjacent words "chemical" and "physics" in the controlled terms of the record, but not necessarily the phrase "chemical physics". It can contain various forms of this controlled term such as "chemical physics and electro-chemistry" and "miscellaneous (chemical physics)" in the controlled terms field. The results of the exact phrase search will contain only the phrase "chemical physics" in the controlled terms of the record.

Example
chemical onear/0 physics wn CV
is not equivalent to
"chemical physics" wn CV

NoteThe NEAR and ONEAR proximity operators are reserved terms within the Engineering Village search engine and cannot be used as the actual search terms "NEAR" or "ONEAR" unless enclosed in braces or quotation marks. Refer to Proximity/Near Operators for more information.
